Check-in time is 1:00, allowing families to spend most of a day in the water park, plus you can stay at the water park until closing on the day you check out. While room rates are premium-priced (most are around $400 per night), rooms are very generous in size and sleep up to 6 people, plus the room rate includes admission to the indoor water park for all room occupants. Children receive wands, compasses or other tools (choice of one) and clues and have to explore the hotel to find the answers.

Throughout the day, there are storytimes and character visits in the lobby, plus the hotel offers the MagiQuest scavenger hunt (for an extra fee). There was plenty of floor space and room in the living area for the kids to play with toys. The Great Wolf Lodge rooms are large and very comfortable our junior suite had 2 queen beds plus a sleeper sofa, a small kitchen area with a separate sink, small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker, a bathroom with tub, and a living area with a fireplace and a sliding glass door onto a smal balcony. There are large and clean changing and shower facilities and lockers, so after checking out you can easily put your luggage in your car and spend the day at the water park and get on the road to your next destination later in the day. A wonderful perk at the hotel is that your family can continue to use the water park all day on the day you check out, right up until closing (9:00 PM most days). It's larger than CoCo Key in Fitchburg, yet not as crowded, because the water park can only be used by overnight guests. The indoor water park includes a wave pool, a huge climbing structure with dump bucket, several tube rides (one includes a vortex), lazy river, shallow play area and climbing structure for non-swimming children, a pool with basketball nets, a hot tub, and more. The entire hotel complex is completely focused on entertaining families and children. Built to look like a pine lodge (on a grand scale), the hotel includes a huge indoor waterpark and outdoor pool, mini golf, an arcade, a bowling alley, multiple food options including a buffet restaurant, pizzeria, sweet shop, and Starbucks, several shops, and a spa for both adults and children. Two fascinating coal mine tours, in Lansford (#9 Mine) and Scranton (Lackawanna Mine), are definitely worth a visit it's both amazing and humbling to go down into the mines and learn about the work conditions that miners experienced for many years.Ī family visit to the Poconos is not complete until you visit Great Wolf Lodge in Scotrun PA, off Route 80. Jim Thorpe PA, which was selected one of the top 10 small towns to live in or visit, is filled with unique architecture and little shops and offers many recreational activities, including white-water rafting on the Lehigh River and a train ride through the river gorge. It's a year-round family-oriented destination - there's great skiing, gorgeous fall foliage, and white-water rafting and lakes in the summer. It's about 5-6 hours from the Lowell area, so it's a perfect place to stop if you're making the long haul to or from the Mid-Atlantic or looking for a new destination for a week's vacation.
One of our "fun break" days was an overnight stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Scotrun PA, in the heart of the Poconos. So many sights and family-oriented things to do! It was a long journey but completely worth the drive - the mountains and caverns were beautiful, the history and culture in Williamsburg and Washington DC was fascinating, and we learned about the harsh realities of life for many immigrants in the coal-mining region of PA. I'll be posting several articles about all of the great destinations in those states in case your family is planning a road trip to the Mid-Atlantic soon. My Macaroni family, including our 6, 9 and 10 year olds, just finished a wonderful 10-day road trip to Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington DC.
